Mustangs Win in Final Inning Push

Freshman Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ)
It wasn't looking good for the WNMU softball team on Sunday afternoon. With Eastern New Mexico University scoring six runs in the fourth and the Mustangs down 10-3 in the sixth, no one in the crowd thought WNMU could score eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to win, but they did exactly that.

WNMU's Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) got the Mustangs on the board first with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring in Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) in the bottom of the second. The Zias answered quickly with a three run homer to centerfield in the next inning.

The Mustangs tacked another one on the board with another sacrifice RBI. This time it was from Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado High School, Mesa Community College) who brought in Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School). The Mustangs were still down, 3-2.

The fourth inning was a mess for WNMU. With five Zia hits and one Mustang error, six runs scored while three were still left on base.

Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) saved the Mustangs from being eight-run ruled in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI because ENMU scored another run in the sixth.

With Lacey Swihart (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) in the pitching circle, Swihart left only one ENMU player on base in the top of the seventh. It was now time for the Mustang batters to cause some havoc.

WNMU got their first out immediately. Then everything started coming together. Reyes singled to left field. Jayo walked, advancing Reyes to second. Swihart singled to right, moving everyone to the next base. Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) got a fielder's choice to second base to bring in Reyes from third but also getting the second out. The lead was shaved to six. Smith then walked, which loaded the bases.

Next Reynolds hit a two-RBI double to center field. The score was now 10-6, Zias. Barnes then singled to right field for another two runs. It was now 10-8, Zias.

Bisgard, who got the first out, was up. The senior drove one up center field to come within one. The Mustangs could smell victory.

Reyes, like her first at-bat of the inning, got a single and brought the tying across home plate. It was Jayo that finished off the game.  She hit a single to left field to drive in Bisgard from third.

The Mustangs had 14 hits, eight which came from the bottom of the seventh. Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) went 4 for 5 at the plate. Barnes was a perfect 2 for 2. Smith, Reynolds, Barnes, and Bisgard all posted two RBIs.

Swihart earned her first win as a Mustang after relieving Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School) and Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School). Swihart recorded the only two strikeouts against the Zias.
