Mustangs Get Their First Win

Freshman Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ)
It took six tries, but they finally got it right on the seventh. The WNMU softball team gained their first win of the season Saturday afternoon. It did not come before falling to Grand Canyon for the fourth time this season, 10-2, but the Mustangs redeemed themselves in the second game of the day versus St. Martin's University by the same score.

Versus Grand Canyon, WNMU only got off five hits in the five-inning game. Two of the hits came in the first inning when they took the early 2-0 lead after a two-run homer by Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School)

Grand Canyon finished with 14 hits, scoring ten.

The story was flipped in the second game of the day. The Mustangs scored four runs in the first. The rest of the runs were just icing on the cake.

Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) went 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs in the game. She also posted four putouts. Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) finished the second game with two hits and four RBIs.

In her best outing as a senior, Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) earned her first win of the season (1-4). She recorded three strikeouts and allowed only three hits in the six innings pitched.

The Mustangs will conclude play in Phoenix on Sunday.
