Softball Drops Two in Phoenix

Junior Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ)
The WNMU softball team continues to search for their first win. The Mustangs dropped two straight games Friday afternoon in Phoenix, Arizona. The first came against Montana State University – Billings, 11-2. The second loss was versus Dixie State College, 5-3.

Things started off great for the Mustangs. Versus Billings, WNMU held off the Yellowjackets on their first at-bats and followed it up with two runs off of three hits to take the 2-0 lead into the second inning.

The lead didn't last long though. Billings scored three runs in the second, one more in the third, and seven runs between the final two innings. Many of the runs were unearned as the Mustangs committed five errors in the game.

In the second game of the day, Dixie State got the scoring started right away in the first after a fielder's choice drove in two runs.

The Red Storm tacked on another run in the second to take a 3-0 lead, but WNMU tied things up in the third. First Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College)reached second base with a double to center field. Junior Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) then doubled to the same spot to bring in Smith. To tie things up, Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) homered over the right field fence, bringing in Reynolds.

Each team played solid defense through the middle of the sixth, but a WNMU error with one out to go in the bottom of the sixth brought in two unearned runs. It proved costly as the Mustangs couldn't get the bats swinging in the seventh.

Reynolds was the lone Mustang to post two hits in the second game, and Barnes was the only Mustang to tally two RBIs.

Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) recorded the Billings' loss and is now 0-4 on the season.
