Mustangs Left Out In The Cold

Senior Justin Williams
Stefan Mirabal;s (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) 17 points and Justin Williams' (Phoenix, AZ, Paradise Valley High School, Phoenix College) 14 points and 11 assists could not propel the Mustangs to their first conference win of the season. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs defeated WNMU, 96-85, Saturday night in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

WNMU had five players in double figures, led by Mirabal's 17. Eli Crevelone (Tucson, AZ, Canyon Del Oro High School) added 16, followed by Williams' 14, TJ Riley's (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University)12, and JeJeron McIntosh's (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) 10.

UCCS's Alex led all scorers with 24 points. Joining Snyder in double figures were Cole Smith (17), Ben Feilmeier (14), Chris Fernandez (11), Jordan McClung (10) and Luke Hristou (10).

UCCS had a significant advantage on the boards, 55-31, while the Mustangs had 14 more fouls called on them than their opponents (27-13). The Mountain Lions shot 36 free throws compared to just 13 for WNMU, although 10 of the UCCS attempts came in the final two minutes when the Mustangs were fouling in an attempt to get back into the game.

WNMU faced a 20-5 deficit in the first 6:13 of the game, but two three pointers helped string together a 14-3 run to cut the UCCS lead to just four (23-19). That was the closest the Mustangs would ever get. UCCS got up by as many as 17 as the half winded down. Three pointers by WNMU's Williams and Riley helped the Mustangs get back to within a more manageable 13 at the half.

Back-to-back three pointers by UCCS gave the Mountain Lions their biggest lead at 68-46 with just under 16 minutes remaining in the game. The Mustangs had small spurts of baskets to cut the lead to nine at 9:53 and then to six with 4:12 left. UCCS closed out the game with a seven-point run over the next two minutes to put the game away.
