The Mustangs had little trouble with the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers Thursday night. WNMU ran away with the victory, 91-70. The Mustangs (2-5, 1-1 RMAC) remain undefeated at home this season. They hope to do another victory dance Saturday night when they host Colorado Christian at 8:00 p.m.
The Orediggers drop to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the RMAC.
The Mustangs kept the intensity up nearly the entire game, preventing Mines from ever putting together a successful run. WNMU, on the other hand, strung together quite a few runs to take a 24-point lead in the second half.
The visitors were up by one, 8-7, after Brett Green hit a three, but WNMU's
Stefan Mirabal (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) capped off a 17-4 run to jump ahead by 12, 24-12, with 10:28 left to play in the first stanza. Mines was forced to call a timeout. The Orediggers could never recover.
Mirabal ended the first half with 14 points and helped give WNMU the 42-33 cushion at intermission.
Mines tried to keep the Mustang lead to single digits, but WNMU was consistent in all aspects of their game and held a double-digit advantage for the final 17 minutes of play.
Mirabal led all scorers and finished the night with 28 points after hitting 11 of his 17 shots. Sophomore
Eli Crevelone (Tucson, AZ, Canyon Del Oro High School) was on fire from three-point land. He hit 4 of 6 from the arc and then drained four more regular field goals for 22 points.
Rebounding was fairly even for the Mustangs. Crevelone,
Chuck Kempf (Chicago, IL, Lakes High School, Trinidad Junior College), and
Justin Williams (Phoenix, AZ, Paradise Valley High School, Phoenix College) each had five caroms. Williams also had 11 assists and four steals in his 36 minutes of play.
For Mines, Dale Minschwaner posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards.
