The men's basketball team traveled to Portales, New Mexico on Tuesday to take on the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds. Things did not go as well as head coach
Mark Coleman had wished. The Greyhounds took the victory, 83-68, but WNMU knew they had a chance to get even on Saturday. On the Mustangs' home floor, the purple and gold welcomed the Greyhounds. Things did go the Mustangs' way this time. The Mustangs earned the win, 76-64.
Playing in 35 minutes,
Stefan Mirabal (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) led all scorers with 26 points. The sophomore went a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line and drained nine field goals.
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) also had a solid game with nine rebounds and four blocks, to lead the team and go along with his 11 points.
Justin Williams (Phoenix, AZ, Paradise Valley High School, Phoenix College) chipped in with 13 points.
The score was knotted at 16 with 12 minutes left to play in the first half, and then WNMU kicked it into high gear and never looked back. The Mustangs went on a 17-4 run to produce their biggest lead of the half. The 13-point lead went down to seven with under two minutes to play, but Juan Saurez sank two free throws and hit a shot from downtown as the buzzer went off to extend the lead to 12. WNMU walked into the locker room with a 42-31 lead.
Four WNMU turnovers in the first three and a half minutes of the second half helped the Greyhounds put together an 8-0 run. The run stopped, though, when Mirabal hit a three from eight feet behind the arc as the shot clock sounded. Mirabal then posted an assist, one steal, one jumper, and two free throws over the next two minutes to help keep the lead at double digits and end the game.
For Eastern, Tyler Jefferson netted 14 points followed by Victor Reid who had 10.
