Men's Basketball

Mustangs Tally Too Many Turnovers

Senior Justin Williams
It was a rocky start to the 2009-2010 men's basketball season. The Mustangs dropped their season opener to Eastern New Mexico University, 83-68, but it is early in the season. They Mustangs will look for revenge on Saturday afternoon when they play hosts to the same team, the Greyhounds.

The Mustangs were in trouble early. In their first six possessions, they turned the ball over four times. This allowed the Greyhounds to jump out to an early 8-0 lead. Eastern New Mexico continued to put pressure on the ball for the remainder of the first half, forcing 14 Mustang turnovers. The Greyhounds had a 35-24 lead at the half.

The 11-point deficit at halftime increased to 23 points with 12:49 left in the game. The Mustangs were able to go on a 15-4 run over a two minute period ending at the 5:08 mark. The Greyhound lead was cut to 10. That was the closest the Mustangs would get however.

With 15 more opportunities at the free line than the Mustangs, Eastern New Mexico took advantage of the free shots and the Mustang foul trouble. Five Mustangs had three or more fouls. The Greyhounds hit 24-of-32 from the stripe. The Mustangs were limited to just 17 opportunities and converted on 11 of them.

TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) finished the game with 19 points to lead all scorers. He also snagged seven rebounds, all on defense, and pitched in with a team high six assists and seven steals. Senior Justin Williams (Phoenix, AZ, Paradise Valley High School, Phoenix College) also had six assists and led the team on the boards. He recorded five offensive rebounds and three defensive grabs.

Stefan Mirabal (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) and Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM, Las Cruces High School) each had 11 points while Eli Crevelone (Tucson, AZ, Canyon Del Oro High School) and Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) each had 10.
