Terron “TJ” Sumpter, Jr., moved to wide receivers during the 2016 season. He will begin his fourth season on the Mustang staff for the 2017 campaign. Coach Sumpter helped Xavier Ayers to yet another good season, as the senior was named the Lone Star Conference Receiver of the Year after catching 80 passes for 1,025 yards and nine touchdowns. He averaged 93.2 yards per game. Rodney Lawson made a strong impact during his first season with the Mustangs as he caught 45 balls for 510 yards and two scores. Two other receivers in Treydonte Hill (350 yards and six touchdowns) and Raeshawn Lee (253 yards and two touchdowns) each had over 100 receiving yards. Overall including running back and tight ends, WNMU receivers brought down 261 passes for 3,195 yards and 25 touchdowns. Ayers led the LSC in receiving yards, 33rd nationally, led in receiving yards per game, 30th nationally and also led the conference in receptions per game (7.3), good for 10th nationally. He was second and 45th nationally in receiving touchdowns, sixth in total touchdowns and 10th in all-purpose yards per game (93.18). WNMU finished third in the LSC and 28th nationally in passing yards per game (290), sixth in passing yards per completion (12.22) and fifth in total offense (407).


Coach Sumpter was in charge of running backs during the 2015 season. He will begin his third season on the Mustang staff in 2016 and will move over to take carge of the wide receivers. During the 2015 season his running backs rushed 345 times for 1,497 yards, 20 touchdowns and an average of 136.1 yards per game. Marques Rodgers collected numerous awards during his sophomore season compiling 1,283 yards on 211 attempts with 10 touchdowns and a long rush of 92 yards and an average of 116.6 yards per game.

Coach Sumpter began his career playing for the Mustangs and then moved to assistant coach in the 2014 season. 

Redshirt freshman running back Marques Rodgers was named the RMAC Freshman of the Year following his terrific season in 2014. The Mustangs as a team set school records for offense in a season, scoring the most points (377) and gaining the most yards (5,606) in WNMU’s documented history. In 2014 WNMU may have been the most balanced offense in the country. The Mustangs were the only team in the country who passed for over 3,600 yards and rushed for over 1,980 yards. The offense was ranked 9th in the nation in total offense averaging over 500 yards a game (509.6), 10th nationally for yards per game passing (329.4), 2nd in the RMAC in points per game (34.3), 18th nationally and 2nd in the RMAC in time of possession per game (35:20), 17th nationally in first downs (288), and gave up the least amount of sacks in the RMAC (1.36) per game.

Sumpter played his collegiate career for the Mustangs playing in 29 total games. In 2009 he was involved with 45 tackles and posted an interception. The next season in 2010 he added 31 tackles and brought in three interceptions. In his final season he played in 10 games and had seven tackles.
