Volleyball Defends Home Court with Sweep

SILVER CITY, N.M. — Western NM swept Lubbock Christian 3-0 on Saturday, taking the sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-22. Western NM finished with a 47-28 advantage in kills and hit .256 while holding Lubbock Christian to .105.

After Lubbock Christian tied the opening set at 17-17, Western NM answered with a Brynlee Barris kill, an Isabella Brewer kill and a Barris service ace to move back in front on the way to a 25-20 set win. Earlier, Western NM built a 6-1 lead during Barris' serve, with Hailey Meeks putting down three kills in a four-point service run.

Western NM created separation early in the second set, winning six straight points after a 1-1 tie on Jayla McDuffie's serve to move ahead 7-1. Barris and Brewer helped build that stretch with kills, while McDuffie added a service ace. After Lubbock Christian got to 22-18, Western NM closed the set with three straight points, finishing it on Jade Rampton's (Nelson, New Zealand/Shanghai American School) kill for a 25-18 set win.

Western NM closed the third set from a 20-20 tie, getting a Savanna Haefs (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista High School) service ace and a Meeks block before Jayden Hughes (High Rolls, NM/Cloudcroft High School) put down a kill for a 23-21 lead. After Lubbock Christian pulled within 23-22, Brewer's kill from Mikelle McAfee (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union High School.) brought Western NM to set point, and the set ended on a Lubbock Christian attack error for a 25-22 Western NM win.

Barris led Western NM with 16 points and five total blocks, adding 10 kills on .500 hitting, nine digs and one ace. Daphne Posthumus (Lelystad, Netherlands/CCNV Harderwijk (Netherlands)) also recorded 10 kills, hit .333 and added two solo blocks. Haefs finished with a team-high 17 assists and added eight digs and one ace. McAfee collected a team-high 12 digs and added three assists.

"It was great to see us play loose and aggressive today," Frugoli said. "To hit, block, and dig against a team that is really good at it was special for us."

Western New Mexico University is 7-6 overall and 2-1 in Lone Star play.

Up next, Western NM volleyball team visits Texas A&M International on Friday, Sept. 25, at 5 p.m. MT at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building in Laredo, Texas.
