The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team closed the 2025–26 season with resilience and a continued commitment to building the foundation of the program, competing throughout a challenging Lone Star Conference slate.
Facing one of the toughest schedules in the region, the Mustangs battled through a season that tested their depth and development, finishing with a 1–25 overall record and 1–19 mark in conference play. While the results did not always reflect the effort on the court, the season provided valuable experience for a young roster and laid important groundwork for the future.
Despite the team's record, the Mustangs showed growth across the season, competing in tight stretches and continuing to improve on both ends of the floor. The team averaged over 50 points per game while working to develop offensive consistency against strong conference defenses. Defensively, the Mustangs were anchored by players who embraced increased roles and responsibilities as the season progressed.
A major bright spot for WNMU came in the emergence of freshman guard Jordan Sapien (El Paso, TX/Pebble Hills High School), who quickly established herself as one of the top young players in the Lone Star Conference. Sapien led the team in scoring, averaging double figures throughout the season and finishing with over 300 total points while also contributing as a playmaker and rebounder. Her all-around production placed her among the team leaders in points, assists, and rebounds, highlighting her impact on both ends of the court.
Sapien's standout freshman campaign earned her recognition at the conference level, as she was named to the Lone Star Conference All-Freshman Team and received Honorable Mention All-Conference honors. Her accolades mark a significant achievement for the program and signal a strong future for Mustang basketball as she continues to develop.
In addition to Sapien's success, the Mustangs saw key contributions from players across the roster, including strong interior play and rebounding efforts that helped the team remain competitive throughout the year. The experience gained by both underclassmen and returning players will be critical as WNMU looks to take the next step forward.
While the 2025–26 season presented its share of challenges, it also reinforced the program's commitment to growth, resilience, and long-term development. With a young core gaining valuable experience and a rising standout in Sapien, the Mustangs are positioned to build momentum heading into the next season.
As the program continues to develop within the Lone Star Conference, the lessons learned this year will serve as a foundation for future success, with the Mustangs focused on turning progress into results in the seasons ahead.
