Men's Basketball Tested in San Angelo Road Matchup

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Western New Mexico Mustangs (16-5, 10-4 Lone Star) faced a tough night on Thursday, falling to the Angelo State Rams (14-10, 5-8 Lone Star) with a final score of 63-52 at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. Both teams battled fiercely on the boards, each pulling down 43 rebounds.

The game tipped off with Western New Mexico grabbing an early lead, thanks to a jumper by Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) just seconds in. Despite a rough shooting stretch, hitting only 8-of-31 from the field in the first half, the Mustangs hung in there with key plays off the bench, contributing 15 crucial points. Keylon Dorsey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower High School) and Quincy Adams (Frisco, TX/Hamilton High School) lit up the scoreboard with clutch three-pointers, keeping the game tied at various points. Although the Mustangs trailed 28-24 at the half, they remained very much in the hunt.

The second half saw Western NM making a spirited push. Adams nailed a three-pointer at 13:22, trimming the Rams' lead to 40-31. Dorsey added to the momentum with an electrifying dunk off a steal at 16:47. Despite these surges, the Rams held their ground, closing out the contest with a 62-52 lead.

Adams had a standout game with nine points and three steals, anchoring the defense. Isaiah Broady (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep) was solid in the paint, adding eight points and snagging seven rebounds. Nolan Brown led the rebounding effort with nine boards and chipped in seven points. Dorsey finished with eight points, including two 3-pointers, boosting the perimeter offense.

On the Rams' side, Jhordan Ryan led with 14 points, shooting a sharp 6-of-7 from the field, and grabbed eight rebounds with three steals. Jabbari Barry matched him with 14 points, sinking three of his five 3-point attempts. Zyon Little also added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Jesaiah McWright made the most of his trips to the line, converting 8-of-14 free throws. Quadir Pettaway contributed with two steals and eight points.

The Mustangs now stand at 16-5 overall with a 10-4 record in Lone Star play. Angelo State moves to 14-10 overall and 5-8 in the conference.

Up next, the Mustangs hit the road to take on Texas Permian Basin this Saturday, Feb. 7, in Odessa, Texas. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
