Mustangs Dominate Rattlers for Record 21st Win

SILVER CITY, N.M. — The Western New Mexico Mustangs (21-5, 14-4 Lone Star) showcased their shooting prowess in an 85-76 triumph over St. Mary's University (TX) (18-8, 11-7 Lone Star) at Drag's Court on Saturday. The Mustangs reached their 21st win of the season, continuing their record season. With 14 bombs from beyond the arc, the Mustangs locked in the win with style.

The game kicked off with a back-and-forth battle, but Western New Mexico found their groove early thanks to their sharpshooters. A crucial 3-pointer from Isaiah Broady (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep) at 16:39 ignited the Mustangs' offense, closing the gap and setting the stage for a dominant shooting display. Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) was instrumental, draining multiple 3-pointers to help build a commanding lead. Capitalizing on St. Mary's turnovers, the Mustangs executed sharp passes and consistent scoring to keep control. By halftime, Western NM led 39-31, setting the pace for the rest of the game.

In the second half, the Mustangs came out swinging, opening with a blistering 10-0 run. Back-to-back triples from Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) and Kelly pushed the lead to 49-33 by 16:22. Quincy Adams (Frisco, TX/Hamilton High School) played a key role, adding a layup and a 3-pointer that kept Western NM out front despite the Rattlers' attempts to rally.

Throughout the half, the Mustangs maintained their edge with balanced scoring and solid defense. A clutch 3-pointer from Kelly with 1:59 left sealed the deal. Western New Mexico notched 46 points in the second half, compared to the Rattlers' 45, wrapping up the game with an 85-76 victory.

Kelly led the charge with 28 points, nailing 6 of 12 from deep and a perfect 6-for-6 at the line. Andre Harris (Mesa, AZ/Hillcrest Prep) chipped in 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and blocked two shots. Seales added three 3-pointers and six assists, while Broady was a defensive force with two blocks and six boards.

Sitting at 21-5 overall and 14-4 in the Lone Star Conference, Western New Mexico looks ahead to their next challenge against Lubbock Christian on Thursday, Feb. 26. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas, where the Mustangs will take their game on the road.
