RICHARDSON, TX — Western New Mexico (14-4, 8-3 Lone Star) powered through with an 89-77 win over UT Dallas (5-12, 4-5 Lone Star) Thursday night at the UTD Activity Center. The WNMU Mustangs flexed their defensive muscles with 14 steals and shared the ball effectively, recording 22 assists in this Lone Star Conference showdown.
The Mustangs answered the opening dunk by the Comets with a quick response.
Andre Harris (Mesa, AZ/Hillcrest Prep) sank a jumper off a
Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) assist at 19:30, tying the score at 2. They kept the momentum rolling, with Nolan Brown's fast-break layup at 17:00 following a steal, edging the score to 11-10. Despite back-and-forth lead changes, the bench chipped in 16 points, and
Isaiah Broady's (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep) clutch 3-pointer at 7:58 brought them within one. A strong finish to the half saw
Trenton Gordon (Aurora, IL/Duluth High School) and Brown add pivotal baskets in the last minute, sending the Mustangs into halftime with a 42-34 lead.
The Mustangs dominated the second half with a commanding offensive display, including an early 9-0 run. Kelly's defensive rebound at 19:36 set the stage for a jumper, pushing the lead to 44-34. Broady delivered critical baskets, including a dunk at 13:06 and a three-pointer at 10:13, extending the gap. The Mustangs capitalized on turnovers, stifling the Comets' chances and standing firm on defense. They wrapped up the game with an 89-77 triumph.
Broady was on fire, scoring 23 points on 10 of 11 shooting, including three from beyond the arc. Kelly dished out six assists and snagged three steals. Harris was all over the court with 14 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, along with four steals.
Keylon Dorsey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower High School) added 14 points, nailing all four of his 3-point attempts and blocking two shots.
Next up, the Mustangs will host Texas A&M - Kingsville on Thursday, Jan. 29, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. at Drag's Court in Silver City, New Mexico.
