Western New Mexico Cruises Past Oklahoma Christian Behind Seales’ 26 Points

SILVER CITY, NM — The WNMU Mustangs (12-4, 6-3 Lone Star) cruised to a 90-77 win over Oklahoma Christian (9-7, 4-6 Lone Star) on Saturday at Drag's Court. With 15 points off turnovers and a solid 37-30 edge on the boards, the victory was theirs to claim.

Western New Mexico kicked things off with a bang, as Nolan Brown drained an early three-pointer at 19:26. The Mustangs capitalized on turnovers, racking up 11 points from them and holding their lead throughout the half. Keylon Dorsey's (Houston, TX/Eisenhower High School) three-pointer at 13:26 and Tanner Poeschl's (Fountain Hills, AZ/Skyline High School) three-point play at 9:14 kept the momentum going strong.

The Mustangs stayed in control with sharp shooting from beyond the arc, sinking eight three-pointers in the first half. Andre Harris (Mesa, AZ/Hillcrest Prep) was instrumental, delivering key points and assists. By halftime, the Mustangs were up 49-36 against the Eagles.

Western New Mexico kept their foot on the gas with a series of crucial plays, starting with James McCallum's (Long Beach, CA./St. Bernard's High School) dunk at 18:31, stretching the lead to 51-41. They continued their surge with a 7-0 run, highlighted by Brown's three at 17:48 and a layup from Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School). Dominating the boards 23-10, the Mustangs wrapped up the half tied at 41-41 with Oklahoma Christian, sealing the game 90-77.

"Tavi was great tonight and was really efficient from the field, said Head Coach Mark Bunker. It seems like every night it's a different guy stepping up for us. It makes us so much tougher prepare for when we have so much balance."

Seales led the charge with 26 points, hitting 9 of 14 from the field and 6 of 7 from the line. Isaiah Broady (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep) chipped in 10 points, adding a block and a steal. Brown contributed nine points, hitting three from deep and snagging four steals. Harris added 12 points, five rebounds, and two free throws.

Miles Gibson topped the effort with 14 points, shooting 5 of 6 and grabbing seven boards. Jason Clark made his mark with 13 points, connecting on 5 of 15 shots and adding five rebounds. Carson Jones logged 13 points, hitting 4 for 6 from the field, including 2 for 3 from downtown. Ma'Syn Howell was a defensive force with two steals, nine points, five rebounds, and three assists. Elijah Bailey added 11 points, converting 3 of 9 field goals and 4 of 5 free throws.

Mark Bunker said, "The crowd makes a huge impact for us. It makes a big difference when we have that kind of home court advantage. We definitely need the entire university and community coming out for such a great cause on Tuesday."

Next up, the Mustangs face Sul Ross State at home, with tip-off set for Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at Drag's Court in Silver City, New Mexico for a Pink Out Night.
