DALLAS, TEXAS — Western New Mexico Men's Basketball (10-4, 4-3 Lone Star) faced a tough challenge on Saturday, falling to DBU (13-4, 7-0 Lone Star) 74-62 at the Burg Center. The Mustangs showed prowess at the free-throw line, hitting 22 of 27, but DBU's edge in rebounds and assists proved decisive.
The game kicked off with DBU taking an early lead, highlighted by a three-pointer from Drew Calderon at 19:41. Western NM countered with a balanced offense, featuring a fast-break dunk by
Keylon Dorsey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower High School) at 12:41, leveling the score at 14. As the first half unfolded, the Mustangs took advantage of DBU's turnovers, with
Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) sealing a brief lead with a layup at 09:15.
Despite strong individual performances, including
Isaiah Broady's (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep) success at the line, the Mustangs struggled to sustain momentum against DBU's sharp offense. DBU surged ahead with a late three-pointer, wrapping up the first half with a 44-36 lead.
In the second half, WNMU made a strong push to narrow the gap.
NoNo Brown (Gilbert, AZ/Perry High School) was pivotal, scoring seven points, including a crucial 3-pointer at 15:02 that chipped away at DBU's lead. The Mustangs capitalized on a steal by Seales, turning it into a fast-break layup with 6:13 left on the clock.
DBU held firm, extending their lead with a 3-pointer and solid free-throw shooting. The Mustangs wrapped up the game trailing 74-62, as the Patriots sealed the victory.
Isaiah Broady (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep) led with 14 points, hitting 9 of 11 free throws and grabbing five rebounds. Brown also scored 14, with five field goals and six rebounds, plus two steals. Seales chipped in 10 points and led the team with four steals, making a mark defensively. Dorsey added 12 points, shooting 4-for-7, including one 3-pointer.
On the DBU side, Xavion Brown paced them with 13 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field and adding two steals. Trevor Frank added 14 points, sinking four 3-pointers on six attempts. Calderon contributed 15 points and was efficient at the line, making 5 of 7 free throws. Jackson McCabe was a defensive standout with four steals and nine rebounds. Justin Haire chipped in seven points and three steals.
The Mustangs now stand at 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the Lone Star Conference, while the Patriots boast a 13-4 overall record and remain unbeaten in Lone Star play at 7-0.
Next up, the Mustangs will host Cameron University at Drag's Court in Silver City, New Mexico. Tip-off is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
