Mustangs Look To Make Statement To Start 2026

SILVER CITY, NM - The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team returns to Drag's Court this weekend for a pair of Lone Star Conference matchups, hosting #14 West Texas A&M on January 2 at 7:00 p.m. before welcoming in-state rival #24 Eastern New Mexico on January 4 at 2:00 p.m. in Silver City, N.M.

The Mustangs enter the weekend with an impressive 8–2 overall record and a 2–1 mark in conference play, marking their best start since the 1994 season. WNMU will look to make history on Friday night as it seeks its first-ever win against West Texas A&M, while continuing to build momentum in LSC action. As of December 29, 2025, the Mustangs rank 10th nationally in Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and sit second highest in the Lone Star Conference, all while facing the 26th toughest strength of schedule in the country.

Sunday's matchup brings added intensity as WNMU faces rival Eastern New Mexico. The Mustangs are 4–6 in the last 10 meetings with the Greyhounds, with their most recent victory coming during the 2022–23 season. With strong early-season performances and conference positioning on the line, the Mustangs aim to defend home court and continue one of the program's most promising starts in decades.
