Men's Basketball Falls to UTEP in Season Opener

Box Score EL PASO, TX. — The Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball team fell to the University of Texas at El Paso, 107-70, at the Don Haskins Center, with the Mustangs securing 25 total rebounds in the contest.

Western New Mexico opened the first half with a free throw by Keylon Dorsey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower High School) to briefly take the lead. However, UTEP quickly responded, creating separation through a series of fast breaks and points in the paint. Despite efforts from the Mustangs to close the gap, including a 3-pointer by Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) at 14:18, the team struggled with turnovers, committing 16 in the half, which UTEP capitalized on to extend their advantage. As the half concluded, Western New Mexico trailed UTEP 52–27.

The Mustangs made a push with a series of fast-break plays, highlighted by Dorsey's layup and free throw at 12:26, which brought their score to 42, countering UTEP's strong early lead. Despite efforts from players like Isaiah Broady (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep), who added a dunk with 6:07 remaining, Western New Mexico faced challenges in closing the gap. UTEP maintained control, responding with consistent scoring, including a 3-pointer by David Tubek at 7:17. As the half concluded, Western New Mexico trailed 107–70, marking the end of the game. Broady led the team by scoring 15 points and recording three steals, while also securing seven rebounds. Kelly added 12 points and facilitated the offense with six assists. Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) contributed 13 points, connecting on five field goals. Andre Harris (Mesa, AZ/Hillcrest Prep) was effective from the free-throw line, converting six of seven attempts, and added two blocks to his performance.

Their next game will take place against New Mexico Highlands University on Friday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. in Portales, New Mexico.
