Mustangs Fall to Fort Lewis in Portales

Box Score PORTALES, N.M. — Western New Mexico University (1-1, 0-0 Lone Star) fell to Fort Lewis College (2-0, 0-0 RMAC) in a close contest, 85-82, at the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena on Saturday. The game featured 11 ties and 18 lead changes, highlighting the evenly matched competition.

Western New Mexico utilized strong perimeter shooting to keep pace with the Skyhawks, converting seven 3-pointers in the first half. The team demonstrated effective ball distribution with 11 assists, which helped offset their rebounding disadvantage. Despite Fort Lewis outscoring Western New Mexico 24-8 in the paint, timely defensive plays, including three blocks, allowed the Mustangs to end the first half tied at 38-38.

Western New Mexico opened the second half strong with back-to-back 3-pointers, gaining momentum and taking the lead. Despite committing 10 turnovers, they managed to stay competitive by converting five 3-pointers and outscoring Fort Lewis 16-14 in the paint. The Skyhawks capitalized on Western New Mexico's fouls, converting 17 of 24 free throws, which kept the game tightly contested, ending the half at 47-44 in favor of Fort Lewis.

Kelly led the team with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, and added five assists. Dorsey scored 16 points, converting four of eight from beyond the arc, and collected six rebounds. Seales posted 17 points and distributed eight assists. Broady contributed defensively with two blocks and two steals, finishing with 11 points.  Western New Mexico stands at 1-1 overall for the season. Fort Lewis holds a 2-0 overall record.

In their next game, the Mustangs will face the Skyhawks on Thursday, Nov. 20, in Durango, Colorado. The matchup will begin at 6 p.m. MT.
