Day One for the Mustangs at the Mountaineer Volleyball Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Gunnison, Colorado - The 2024 Volleyball season continued today for the Western New Mexico Mustangs. They would start off the Mountaineer Volleyball Classic with a total of two matches in Gunnison, Colorado. The Mustangs would battle tough with each of the sets but would ultimately fall 1-3 against Academy of Art and 2-3 against Western Colorado.
 
Academy of Art:

Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy High School) lead the offense for the Mustangs with 10 kills. Eimaya Medina (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) would spread the ball around the court nicely with 24 assists. Chase Kallevig (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg High School), Lilouann Bechec (Cannes, France) and Eimaya Medina (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) would lead our team with a pair of aces each.

The back row of the Mustangs had a busy game as Chase Kallevig (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg High School) and Lilouann Bechec (Cannes, France) each recording 18 digs on the court. Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy High School), Jade Rampton (Nelson, New Zealand/Shanghai American School), Carley Deck (Tucson, AZ/Tanque Verde High School), Eimaya Medina (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School), and Jéssica Sales would protect the net with 2 block assists each.  
 
Set 1
The Mustangs would start off strong gaining a four point run making the score 4-0. Continuing to stay in the lead the rest of the set the Mustangs would shut the Urban Knights down 25-15 winning the first set.

Set 2
In set two, the Urban Knights jumped out quickly to a 7-4 advantage. The Mustangs would come back to tie it off at 11-11. Ultimately, they would fall to the Urban Knights 25-16.

Set 3 
For set number three the Mustangs and Urban Knights would stay neck and neck, tying at 10-10. The Mustangs would come back battling but ultimately fall to the Urban Knights 25-21.

Set 4
The Urban Knights used their momentum from the last two sets to gain a lead of 10-6. The Mustangs would try their best to catch up and tighten the gap but would fall short to Urban Knights losing 25-21.

Western Colorado:
 
Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy High School) would be the Mustangs leader on offense for the sixth straight match with 19 kills. Eimaya Medina (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) dished out 42 assists during the game against Western Colorado.
 
Lilouann Bechec (Cannes, France) would be covering every spot on the floor as well tonight for the Mustangs with 29 digs. Jéssica Sales would do her best and record three block assists.
 
Set 1
Set one would start with the Mustangs and the Mountaineers would go neck and neck and tie it at 16-16. The Mountaineers would soon push through and win the set 25-20.

Set 2
Set two starts the same with both teams battling back and forth and tying at 22-22. This time, the Mustangs will do their best and gain the win against the Mountaineers with 25-23.

Set 3
In set number three, the Mustangs gained a small lead having a gap of 10-5. With both teams battling they tie it up together at 25-25 making them push into extra points. The Mustangs arose to the pressure taking the lead and won the set 30-28.

Set 4
Using their momentum, the Mustangs gained a lead of 17-13. The Mountaineers later fought back and pushed ahead to win the set 25-22.

Set 5
With both the Mustangs and the Mountaineers tied 2-2 for sets, the Mustangs took a string early run to a lead of 6-2. Only going to 15 points, the Mountaineers came back and ended up on top to win the Match 15-10.

The Mustangs completed their first day at the Mountaineer Volleyball Classic 0-2. They hope to turn it around and begin their day tomorrow for their second day against Washburn at 11AM MT and Fort Lewis 5PM MT.
