LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Western New Mexico University Volleyball Team closed the book on their 2024 preseason with an exhibition match against the Aggies of New Mexico State University. The Mustangs would have a great showing, but would fall 3-0 against their Division I opponent.
"Today was a great opportunity to play a high caliber team that was filled with experience and athleticism." Said WNMU Head Coach
Geno Frugoli. "We played hard and saw the typical great and bad plays that come with an early exhibition and look forward to polishing it all up for the season opener."
Senior
Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) led the offense on the night for the Mustangs with 6 kills.
Jéssica Sales would follow with 5 kills of her own. Freshman,
Ava Wadley (Wichita, KS/), stepped in to spread the ball around the court nicely with nine assists.
Lilouann Bechec (Cannes, France/) patrolled the back row of the Mustangs, recording 16 digs on the night. Up at the net,
Jade Rampton (Nelson, New Zealand/) added one block for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs kept the score close early, at one point going on a 5-0 run to make the score to 11-16. The Aggies would get on a roll late however, taking set one 25-18.
Aggies 1, Mustangs 0.
In set two, the Mustangs would continue to keep things close early. After a Sales kill and a Hughes ace, the Mustangs trailed 9-11. The Aggies would go on an 8-0 run late, to take set tow 13-25.
Aggies 2, Mustangs 0.
For set number three the Mustangs and the Aggies would trade points back and forth until it was 17-19. The Aggies would go on another late 5-0 run to give them the set 18-25.
Aggies 3, Mustangs 0.
The Mustangs will officially get their season on September 6-7, 2024, at the Midwestern State Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Mustangs will take the court on September 6 at 10 a.m. MT against the Adams St. Grizzles.
