SILVER CITY, N.M.– The Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball team celebrated senior night on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico. WNMU honored lone senior Brandon Cotrell.
This puts the Mustangs at 4-23 (2-19).
Two Mustangs managed double digits on the Greyhounds. Leading the Mustangs was Cortaviaus Seals with 30 points including three from deep.
Nik Atanasovs (Riga, Latvia/Vidusskloa) added 10 points.
Turnovers would hurt the Mustangs tonight. WNMU committed 17 TOs compared to only eight from the Greyhounds.
Mustangs shot 17-38 (44%) from the field and 3-7 (42%) from deep in the first half. WNMU finished the game shooting 26-73 (35%) and 5-14 (35%) from three. ENMU would shoot 39-66 (59%) from the field and 12-24 (50%) from behind the arc for the game.
At the charity stripe WNMU went 20-24 (83%) and ENMU shot 16-34 (47%).
On the boards,
Tanner Vogel (Stratham, Australia/Georgiana Molloy Anglican School) each secured 11 rebounds.
Allen Fordham (Far Rockaway, NY/Queens High School For Technology) added seven. Vogel and
Jordan Williams (Pensacola, FL/J. M. Tate High School) had two assists each..
In the defensive department, three Mustangs had a steal.
The Mustangs began the first half in a nail bitter with the Greyhounds, as neither team could build more than a six-point lead. WNMU would be able to build their biggest of game, seven with under 10 to go in the half. ENMU made a late run at the end of the half to claim the lead 45-43.
In the second half the Mustangs and Greyhounds would continue to throw haymakers at each other. The Mustangs hung around for as long as they could, only trailing by two with 11:30 to play. ENMU would deploy a 30-12 run. The Mustangs would be defeated 106-77.
Greg Johnson scored 32 points on the Mustangs. Tre'Von Love added 20 as well
