WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS - Western New Mexico University's football team faced a challenging final game of the 2024 season against Midwestern State University. Despite a strong first half where the teams were tied at 14 at the break, the Mustangs struggled to maintain their momentum, allowing 38 points in the second half, falling 52-24.
The Mustangs showcased some bright spots on offense, led by quarterback
Connor Ackerley (Tempe, Arizona/Corona Del Sol High School), who completed 25 of 45 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns.
Jamon Chambers (Federal Way, WA/Stadium High School) and
Zay Savoie (Apache Junction, AZ/Red Mountain High School) contributed to the ground game with 36 and 34 rushing yards.
Kaden Millner (Queen Creek, AZ/Higley High School) made his footprint at receiver for WNMU, catching 7 passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns, while Chambers added 64 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Defensive leaders for the Mustangs were,Â
Osvaldo Raigosa (Whittier, CA/La Serna High School, Gaberilino High School), who led the team with 11 tackles and one forced fumble, and
Cole Lalama (Queen Creek, AZ/Queen Creek High School), who recorded eight tackles and a tackle for loss.
Clayton Zentner (Corona, CA/Norco High School) ended the game with 5 tackles and two pass breakups, while
Nicholas Smith (Riverside, CA/) added a sack for the Mustangs.
Zach Gordon (Lillington, NC/Rosewood High School) made his lone field goal attempt, a 21-yard field goal, and converted all three extra points.
The Mustangs committed eight penalties for 91 yards and gave Midwestern State great field position throughout the day with two turnovers on interceptions and a blocked punt.
The Mustangs finish the 2024 season 2-9 on the year, going 0-9 in Lone Star Conference play.
