ODESSA, Texas – The Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball team finished off a two-game road trip against the Falcons of UTPB. The Mustangs dropped their second game in a row 90-70.
This puts the Mustangs at 3-8 (1-5).
Three Mustangs managed double-digits on the Falcons.
Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) was offensive leader again with 18 points.
Tanner Vogel (Stratham, Australia/Georgiana Molloy Anglican School) and
LaMarqus Merchant Jr. (Utica, NY/Utica Academy of Science) added 10 each.
Points in the paints and turnovers would be the Mustangs undoing. The Falcons forced 20 Mustang turnovers, compared to 10 from the Falcons. In the paint, WNMU was outscored 46-26.
The Mustangs shot 9-23 (39%) from the field and 2-9 (22%) from deep in the first half. WNMU finished the game shooting 25-58 (43%) and 8-24 (33%) from three. The Falcons would shoot 33-65 (50%) from the field and 7-24 (29%) from behind the arc for the game.
At the charity stripe the Mustangs went 12-17 (70%) and the Falcons shot 17-21 (81%).
On the boards, Vogel grabbed six rebounds. Merchant Jr. and Seales dished out four assists apiece.
In the defensive department, three Mustangs recorded a steal.
Nik Atanasovs (Riga, Latvia/Vidusskloa) added a block.
The Mustangs began the first half up 6-3, for their largest and final lead of the game. Midway through the first, UTPB found themselves leading 19-10. WNMU trim the lead, only trailing 39-31 at the half.
In the second half the Falcons wasted no time building up the lead, as they went up 20-points in less than three minutes of action. The Mustangs would never get much going in the second half, as they fell 90-70.
Alex Matthews scored a game-high 32-points with eight boards for the Falcons. Zy Wright added 21-points as well.
