SILVER CITY, N.M. - The 2023 Lone Star Conference preseason football poll was released Thursday July 27, 2023.
All nine LSC football members had delegations of head coaches and players in attendance with Head Coach Billy Hickman, QB Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS), and LB Clavon Caine (Long Beach, CA/Lakewood HS) representing Western New Mexico.
The Mustangs were voted to finish the 2023 campaign a surprising ninth in conference play by conference coaches, SID's, and media representatives.
2022 LSC Champion, Angelo State, tops the poll as the preseason favorite with 25 of 27 first place votes, with Central Washington and Texas A&M-Kingsville finishing up the top three.
WNMU kicks the 2023 season off with a home contest against future LSC member, Sul Ross State. The Season Opener is set for September 2, 2023, at 6pm from Ben Altamirano Field. The Mustangs will have their first road game of the season the following week with the return of the La Batalla Bowl, against New Mexico Highlands, September 9, 2023, at 6pm.

The 2023 Lone Star Conference Football Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. Were also announced with Central Washington's running back Tre'jon Henderson and Texas A&M-Kingsville defensive back Amos Coleman taking those honors.
