Mustangs Halted By LCU

SILVER CITY, N.M. - Tuesday afternoon, at "The Yard'', the Western New Mexico University Mustangs lost the first two games to Lubbock Christian. In game one the Mustangs fell 5-1 in nine innings and in game two the Chaparrals won 9-1.

GAME ONE:

LCU jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. LCU's Berkeley Quinn hit a solo homerun. The Chaps led 1-0. 

Headed to the 5th inning, WNMU's Ciara Salazar (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa HS) doubled in a run to tie the game up at 1-1.

Both teams couldn't get anything across the plate until the 9th inning. The Chap's made some noise and hit a grand slam by Tiarra Delrosario to take a 5-1 lead. 

Getting the start for the Mustangs was Kamerynn Cordova (Fowler, CA/Fowler HS). She is now (2-12) on the year after going 8.1 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 4 K, and 5 BB. Aryna Munoz finished out the game throwing, 0.2 IP, and 1 H.

The Chaps started Taylor Franco in the circle. She is now (10-6) on the year. She went 9.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 12 K, and 1 BB. 

The Chaparrals notable hitters:

B. Quinn: 2-for-4, 2 R, HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB

T. Delrosario: 2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SB

C. Salazar: 1-for-3, 2B, 1 RBI

B. Munoz: 1-for-4

L. Lucero: 1-for-2

GAME TWO:

Emily Maddux (Douglas, AZ/Douglas High School) got the loss (0-7) after surrendering 0.2 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 2 K, and 2 BB. Cassidy Paulson (Arvada, CO/Golden Colorado HS) finished the game and went 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 K and 1 BB. 

LCU's Maxine Valdez was throwing a perfect game until the 5th inning, when Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) was inches away from hitting a home run. The Mustangs would break up the shutout after Aryana Munoz (Dexter, New Mexico/Dexter High School) singled in a run.

LCU hit five runs in the top of the 1st inning. Kasey Flores hit a two-run home run and the next batter, Skylar Herrera hit a solo home run. Later in the inning, Riley Flores and Kamyrn Gibbs each hit a run in.

In the top of the 2nd inning, S. Herrera singled in another, making the LCU lead to 6-0.

LCU continued their momentum to the top of the 4th inning, with Hope Banales singling a run in. Flores hit her second home run of the game, giving the Chaps a 9-0 lead.

LCU's starting pitcher, Maxine Valdez, earned the win and is now (11-2). She went 4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 K, and1 HBP. Kaeleigh Vega finished the game throwing 0.1 IP.

K. Flores: 2-for-3, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI

T. Delrosario: 2-for-3, 2 2B

S. Herrera: 2-for-3, 1 R, HR, 2 RBI

R. Flores: 1-for-2, 1 R, 2B, 1 RBI

B. Munoz: 1-for-2, 

The Mustangs will play the third game of the series against Lubbock Christian at 12:00pm MT.
