SILVER CITY, N.M. – Western New Mexico University's Head Football Coach Billy Hickman has brought back Sam Camp as the Mustangs Offensive Coordinator.
"When I got the job, I knew I wanted to be aggressive in getting Sam to come back out here," said Head Football Coach Billy Hickman. "Sam is a young coach who is so smart and focused. I knew his time at Army only amplified that."
Camp joined the Army Football coaching staff in 2022. Working alongside Army Defensive Coordinator Nate Woody, Camp helped create a game plan each week on how they thought the opposing offense would attack and how to stop it.
"Grace and I are excited to be back in Silver City and be a part of the Mustang family," said Camp. "I am very appreciative of Coach Hickman for giving me this opportunity to come back."
In 2021, Coach Philip Vigil hired Camp to be the Mustangs wide receivers, tight ends, pass game coordinator, recruiting coordinator, and video coordinator. He helped aid in the production of the 2021 Lone Star Conference leader in receptions (61) Josh Powell, as well as the leading passer, Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS).
"Sam is a highly organized person, who is also an outstanding recruiter," said Hickman. "He is going to help our offense continue to grow to the point where we can be the best in the Lone Star Conference."
"Billy has been a great friend and mentor to myself and many others which makes this all the more special," said Camp. "I look forward to helping Coach Hickman continue to push these young men in bringing this program to new heights."
Camp also spent a season at Texas Wesleyan University (2020), holding the title of receivers, tight ends director of football operations and video coordinator. He also spent time at Kansas Wesleyan University (2018-19), holding the positions of wide receivers, tight ends and video coordinator. At Kansas Wesleyan he helped coach an offense that ranked No. 3 overall in total offense in the NAIA in 2018 and ranked No. 2 in the 2019.
Camp came to Kansas Wesleyan after a four-year career at Friends University in Wichita, KS. While at Friends, Camp played wide receiver for the Falcons, recording 100 career receptions and 1,242 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. As a senior in the 2017 campaign, Camp had 46 receptions for 599 yards for the Falcons.
Throughout his time at Friends, Camp was a two-time second-team wide receiver, a second-time utility player, honorable-mention receiver and honorable-mention utility player in the KCAC. Using his athletic abilities to the fullest, he was also a member of the Friends University Track and Field team.
The native of Winfield, KS, received his master's in business administration from Kansas Wesleyan University and completed his degree in Health Management from Friends in 2018.
Sam is married to his wife Grace, as they have two Husky dogs named Swiper and Gemma. When he is not spending time with his family, he likes to golf, fish, and hunt.
