Silver City, NM- The Mustangs were on Drags Court once again to take on Texas A&M International Dustdevils. Mustangs would snag this game with a buzzer beater from
Brooke Rodgers (Phoenix, Arizona/Cactus Shadows High School) ending the game with a final score of 51-50.
"The girls did a good job of not giving up staying in the game even when we were down multiple times," said Head Coach
Josh Pace."We have to learn how to keep leads and finish teams off."
The Mustangs saw great defensive efforts, stealing nine balls resulting in 12 points. WNMU out rebounded having 37, including 12 offensive to TAMIU's 22 rebounds (three offensive).
Diamond Moore (Colorado Springs, CO/Harrison High School) would lead the Mustangs once again with 16 points and six rebounds. Susi Namao,
Brooke Rodgers (Phoenix, Arizona/Cactus Shadows High School), and
Delaney Cook (Peoria, IL/Peoria Notre Dame High School) would all end the game with nine points.
With a back-and-fourth fight, in the first half the stats were nearly the same. Mustangs shooting 11-of-26 (42.3%) from the field, 2-of-8 (25%), and 1-of-2 (50%) from the free-throw line. The Dustdevils would be 12-of-23 (43.5%) from the field, 3-of-8 (37.5%) from the three, and 2-of-2 (50%) from the free-throw line. This would allow for WNMU and TAMIU to be tied going into halftime 25-25.
Mustangs have been performing very well coming out of halftime improving their numbers significantly. Keeping turnovers to a minimum and out rebounding TAMIU 26-15 this would give the Mustangs the lead going into the fourth quarter with a score of 38-31.
Every second mattered in the fourth quarter. With 11 seconds left Marija Bakic would make a crucial layup to put the Dustdevils up by three. Mustangs would then come back down and snag a foul,
Diamond Moore (Colorado Springs, CO/Harrison High School) would go ahead and add two to the score board making it 50-49. Mustangs were fouling and got there person the shoot. TAMIU would miss both free throws giving the possession back to the Mustangs. The ball would be put
Brooke Rodgers (Phoenix, Arizona/Cactus Shadows High School) hands, taking it all the way to the basket and finishing the game for the Mustangs.
Raiana Brown would lead for the Dustdevils with 19 points. Meli Hornedo (9), Marija Bakic (8).
"We will take the win, and I am very proud of our team," concluded Pace.
The Mustangs next competition will be in Lubbock, TX, to take on Lubbock Christian University, January 21 at 4:30 PM MT.
