Box Score 2 Denton, Tex. – The Western New Mexico volleyball team made their way to Conference Challenge Weekend at Texas Woman's University on Thursday September 8
th. The Mustangs started with two matches on Thursday, Cameron University and Texas Woman's University. The Aggies of Cameron and the Pioneers of Texas Woman's University would sweep the Mustangs in both games 3-0.
In game one Junior
Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) lead the offensive attack for the Mustangs finishing with nine kills. Senior
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) was sending "pocket passes" all afternoon to her hitters as she totaled 22 assists on the night.
Sophomore
Eliana Moultrie (El Paso, TX/Canutillo HS) was in charge of the defense tonight. She finished with 15 digs.
In set one the Mustangs started off controlling the game as they led 13-9 early. The Aggies however would make a late run tying the game up at 20. The Mustangs would fall to the Aggies in set one 25-22.
The Mustangs would take an early lead in set two, 16-11, before falling victim to an Aggie run. The Aggies would win set two 25-23 and take a 2-0 set lead on the Mustangs.
Set three was all Aggies from the first serve. The Aggies would build their lead early 14-7 and lead by as many as eight points in set three. The Mustangs would never be able to build any consistent momentum and they would drop the set 25-19. Aggies 3, Mustangs 0.
In game two senior
Zoë Chatterton would lead the offense. Chatterton would finish with eight kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Culp would lead the Mustangs in assists in game two as well as she tallied 12 assists for the match.
Moultrie would be the vocal point of the defense in match two, just as she was in match one. She would finish with a season-high 16 digs.
Set one, the Pioneers built a 10-4 lead early over the Mustangs. The Mustangs would rally and keep things close but would lose the set 25-18.
In set two the Pioneers would jump out to a commanding 11-1 lead over the Mustangs. The Mustangs would make the final score more respectable but would lose set two 25-17. Pioneers 2, Mustangs 0.
The Mustangs would jump to an early 10-7 lead on the Pioneers in set three. Set three would be a back-and-forth battle between the teams, but the Pioneers would prevail and take the set 25-23, sweeping the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will be back in action at Pioneer Hall and Kitty Magee Arena against Midwestern State University (1:00PM MT) on Friday September 9
th for day two of the Conference Challenge Weekend.
