Box Score Lacey, Wash. – The Western New Mexico volleyball team was in action Saturday morning, September 3
rd for their final game of the Saint Martin's Invitational. The Mustangs would lose the hard-fought match in five sets against Colorado Christian University.
Senior
Zoë Chatterton was the focal point of the Mustang attack today as she totaled 21 kills against the Cougars. Fellow Senior
Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) followed with 14 kills and a .412 hitting percentage.
Veteran
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) was dishing out assists all morning as recorded 21 assists. Culp also had four aces to her name today. Freshman
Peyton Castillo (Las Vegas, NV/Sierra Vista HS) kept pace with Culp once again, recording 19 assists of her own.
The Mustang defense was led by Augustine's 23 digs and sophomore
Janey Cortez (El Paso, TX/East Lake HS) adding 19 digs of her own.
In set one, the Mustangs would get out to a 18-14 lead over the Cougars. The Mustangs would win set one 26-24.
Set two the Mustangs would jump out to 11-6 lead over the Cougars. The Mustangs would ride their big lead and down the Cougars in set two, 25-18.
The Mustangs in set three would take the lead early 10-6. The Mustangs would maintain the lead throughout set three, but a late rally by the Cougars would be enough to defeat the Mustangs 27-25.
In Set four it was all Cougars, as they quickly jumped out to a 6-1 lead over the Mustangs. The Mustangs could not figure it out as they lost the set 25-10.
Set five the Mustangs would go down quickly 11-4. The Cougars would ride that momentum and take the set 15-7, winning the match 3-2.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Thursday September 8
th at Pioneer Hall and Kitty Magee Arena against Cameron University (6:00PM MT) for Conference Challenge Weekend at Texas Women's University.
