Mustangs Fall to Lady Buffs on Senior Day

Silver City, NM - Sunday afternoon was the Western New Mexico University Softball's senior day. The Mustangs played a doubleheader against West Texas. The Mustangs would lose both games 10-1 and 9-1.

Three seniors, #11 Jane Ruiz,  #14 Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS), and #18 Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) were recognized as they played their last home games today.

Game One:

The Lady Buffs would get two runs in the 1st inning. Braeland Booth and Diana Murtha would hit back-to-back home runs.

The Mustangs got on the board in the 2nd inning after Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) walked followed by Trish Gallardo (Albuquerque, NM/Volcano Vista High School) reaching on an error. Garcia would eventually score off an Aryana Munoz (Dexter, New Mexico/Dexter High School) groundout.

In the 3rd inning, WT extended the lead to 3-1 after a sacrifice fly. The following inning, the Lady Buffs got four runs on five hits, giving WT a 7-1 lead.

WT put the game out of reach after Booth hit her second home run of the game and Madison Johnson followed with a solo shot, making the lead 10-1.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) got the start, going 3.1 IP, 10 H, 7 R (6 ER), 2 K and BB. Aryana Munoz (Dexter, New Mexico/Dexter High School) finished it out. She went 1.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, K, and BB. 

The Lady Buffs started Heidi Vorthems. She is now 12-6 on the year. She went 4.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 5 K, 3 BB and HBP. Halle Lytal finished out the game, going 1.0 IP and K.

Lady Buffs notable hitters:

Braeland Booth: 4-for-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI

Madison Johnson: 3-for-4, HR, 2 R, 1 RBI

Diana Murtha: 1-for-3, HR, 3 R, 1 RBI, BB

Ruby Salzman: 2-for-4, 2 2B 2 R, 1 RBI

Game Two:

The Lady Buffs got on the board first in the 1st inning with back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly. 

The Mustangs answered back in the 1st inning after Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) doubled in a run. After one inning of play WT led 2-1.

In the 3rd inning, WT would two more runs, with a solo homerun and three consecutive singles to bring in a run.

In the 5th inning, the Lady Buffs added an insurance run. WT continued the momentum in the 6th inning with four runs on five hits, including a three-run home run.  

Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) started for the Mustang pitching 5.0 IP, 15 H, 9 ER, K, and BB.

WT's starting pitcher was Emilee Wilson. She went 0.1 IP, 3 H, and 1 ER. Kyra Lair got the win for WT, and is now (3-3) on the year. She went 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K, and BB. Emma Parish finished the game going 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, and K.

Julie Guzman: 2-for-3, HR, 2B, R, 3 RBI

Ruby Salzman: 1-for-3, 2B 2 R, 1 RBI, BB

B. Munoz: 1-for-3, 2B, R

The Mustangs will play their last two games in Odessa, TX, playing against UT Permian Basin. First pitch will start at 12:00pm MST.
