Portales, N.M. - Saturday afternoon concluded the 2021-22 season for the Western New Mexico University's Men's Basketball team. Eastern New Mexico would have the upper hand, defeating the Mustangs 87-64.
The 2021-22 Mustangs team accomplished great feats. For the first time in ten years, the Mustangs won 10 or more games. The Mustangs also had the best start in modern history winning their first five games to open up the year.
Three Mustangs went on to score in double-figures. Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate HS) led all Mustang scorers with 16pts. Jordan Doss (Chicago, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy) put up 12pts and Olamide Pedersen (Bronshoj, Denmark /Sunrise Christian Academy) ended the night with 10pts.
ENMU had five players score in double-figures. JaQuan Morris led Greyhound scores with 16pts. ENMU went 13-29 (44.8%) from three.
In the first half, ENMU led 38-24. WNMU shot 22.2% and all two point field goals (6-27) and was 12-14 (85.7%) at the free throw line.
In the second half, the Mustangs offense picked up. WNMU ended up shooting 30% (18-60), 17.9% from three (5-28), and 76.7% (23-30) from the free throw line.
ENMU rebounded the ball well, having 47 compared to the Mustangs 39. The Greyhounds had 11 offensive rebounds. WNMU also had 12 offensive rebounds and converted 13 second chance points.
WNMU turned the ball over 14 times, compared to ENMU's 12. Both teams had 12 points off of turnovers.
There were 42 combined fouls. The Mustangs committed 19 and the Greyhounds had 23. ENMU had four players with four fouls and the Mustangs had three players with four or more fouls.
