SILVER CITY, N.M. - Western New Mexico University Head Football Coach, Philip Vigil, has stepped down after two seasons as the Mustangs leader to become CSU Pueblo's head coach.
Vigil has a (7-15) overall record the last two years. For the first time in 30 years, the Mustangs had a winning record (6-5) and a Green Chile Bowl victory over Eastern New Mexico. 17 Mustangs went on to earn LSC honors, the most since joining the LSC.
Scott Noble, Executive Director of Athletics:
"When you hire extraordinary people who do extraordinary things, it can be hard to keep them. We were very fortunate to have had Phil and Melanie Vigil, along with their children Peyton, Ava, and Olivia, as part of our Mustang family for the last two years. Coach Vigil's success here has been unmatched for the last 29 years; and when special people have special seasons, people take notice. We knew there would be a time when success would lead to new opportunities for Coach and his family. We wish them the best as he takes over the football program at CSU-Pueblo. Now we turn the page.
Our culture has certainly been proven and is rooted in the foundation of all our sports programs. We will continue improving our facilities and supporting scholarship and academic opportunities for our student-athletes. Within the football program, our leadership will remain strong, and I am truly excited about what the future holds for our Western New Mexico University Mustangs."
The Mustangs will open up the 2023 seasons against Sul Ross State September 3rd.
