ODESSA, TX. – Saturday evening, at Ratliff Stadium, the Western New Mexico University's football team would be defeated by UT Permian Basin 37-14.
The Mustangs starter Quarterback Grant Patterson (Folsom, CA/Vista de Lago HS), who threw for 102 yards, had two touchdowns (one rush) and an interception. Paul Armijo Jr. came into the game in the second have and had 53 yards.
David Telles (Los Angeles, CA/Franklin HS) led the Mustangs in receptions with six, totaling 72 yards. Vincent Rankin (Los Angeles, CA/Alexander Hamilton HS) had the only rushing touchdown. Patterson also led the Mustangs in rushing 29 yards and a touchdown.
The Mustangs defense forced a fumble and had an interception Cauy Oropeza (El Paso, TX/Del Valle HS) led the defense in tackles for 14 and recovered a fumble. Kaleb Gutierrez (El Paso, TX/Franklin HS) and Jacob Vasquez (San Antonio TX) also had seven tackles. Vasquez had two pass breakups, Quentron Gallow (Crowley, LA/Crowley HS) had a pass breakup and Jordan Davis () had an interception.
The Mustangs defense had a huge stop which would force UTPB to kick a field goal. The Falcons would miss the field goal. The Mustangs would storm down the field, ending with a Grant Patterson (Folsom, CA/Vista de Lago HS) rushing touchdown.
UTPB got on the board with a safety. Next possession, they marched down the field and scored a touchdown, making the score 9-7.
The Falcons got an interception and capitalized with a 12 yard touchdown run. UTPB led 16-7.
Later in the second quarter, the Mustangs scored on 25 yard pass to Vincent Rankin (Los Angeles, CA/Alexander Hamilton HS) on 4th and 10. The Mustangs cut the Falcon lead to 16-14
With 10 seconds remaining, UTPB's Defensive Lineman Joseph Williams rushes for the touchdown and extends their lead to 23-14.
UTPB extended their lead to 30-14, with a one yard rush by Nathan Tilford.
Grant Patterson (Folsom, CA/Vista de Lago HS) fumbled and the Falcon defense scooped and scored, making the lead 37-14.
UTPB had the ground game working. Nathan Tilford rushed 108 yards and two touchdowns. Kory Harris rushed for 105 yards. Taj Crenshaw rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown. The Falcons also utilized a defensive lineman for a touchdown.
November 12th, the Mustangs will play at Eastern New Mexico for the Green Chile Bowl!. Kickoff is at 2:00pm MDT.
