Mustangs Defeat Warriors on Day One

Box Score PHOENIX, ARIZ. – The Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball traveled to Scott Activity Center on Nov. 15th to take on SAGU American Indian. The Mustangs would defeat the Warriors 78-60.

"We are happy we won the game," said Head Coach Zane Gibson. "You play to win the game and we accomplished that but we need to keep striving to get better."

Three Mustangs managed to score in double-figures. Keith Littles (Augusta, GA/) led all scorers with 21 points on 7/9 from the field. Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate HS) and Emmanuel White (Katy, TX/) chipped in 14 points each. Avalos shot 3-5 from beyond the arc and White shot 6-9 from the field.

"I thought Keith had a great night attacking the rim," said Gibson.

The three-ball proved to be the difference maker for the Mustangs. WNMU shot an impressive 11-21 (52%) from beyond the arc. The Warriors shot 27 threes only making seven of them, giving them a percentage of 26%.

The Warriors did out score the Mustangs 22-15 in the paints.

On the glass DJ Heath (Anniston, AL/) and White led the Mustangs with five rebounds each. Littles and Isaiah Lewis (Mansfield, TX/) added four board each as well. Lewis and Littles were also the top playmakers on the night with four assists each. Olamide Pedersen (Bronshoj, Denmark/Sunrise Christian Academy) had an impressive four blocks on the night.

"Ola did a fantastic job blocking and effecting shots at the rime tonight," said Gibson.

In the first half the Mustangs shot the ball at a 55% clip, including 62% from three-point range. WNMU would finish the game shooting 51% from the field and 52% from three. The Warriors managed to shoot 38%% from the field and only 26% from beyond the arc.

WNMU went into halftime leading the Warriors 47-26. The Warriors would manage to outscore the Mustangs 34-31 in the second half, but the Mustangs big first half helped them win an 18-point victory.

"Hopefully tomorrow we take somethings we learned tonight and really put them into the game tomorrow," said Gibson.

Three Warriors managed to score double figures on the Mustangs. Rob Jenkins dropped 19 points on the Mustangs including 4/7 from three. Keyshawn Celestino added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors. Harley Upton chipped in 11 points and six boards.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Nov. 16th at SAGU (2:00PM MT).
