Box Score San Antonio, Texas - Continuing their road trip, the Western New Mexico University's Men's Basketball team had offensive troubles at the Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, TX, falling against the St. Mary's Rattlers 86-70. The Mustangs are now 9-7 on the year and 2-4 in LSC play.Â
The Mustangs failed to lead at any point in the game. As a team, WNMU shot 32.8%, going 19-58. From three, the Mustangs were 21.4%, going 3-14. WNMU produced at the free throw line going 29-34 (85.3%).Â
Three Mustangs scored in the double-figures; Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate HS), Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe HS), and Robert Banks (Dallas,TX /Duncanville HS). Avalos led the team with 16pts, Cash had 12pts, and Banks had 10pts.
The Rattlers overpowered the boards, rebounding the ball 41 times to the Mustangs 34. St. Mary's had 21 second chance points. As for WNMU, they had 10 second chance points.
WNMU had 14 turnovers, helping result into 20 fast point breaks. The Rattlers had 15 turnovers but just had 10 fast point breaks.
In the first half, the Mustangs shot 33.3% (9-27), 14.3% (1-7) from three, and 91.7% (11-12) from the free throw line. St. Mary's shot 44.4% (16-36), 27.3% (3-11) from three, and 83.3% (10-12) from the free throw line. St. Mary's went into the half leading 45-30.
St. Mary's began getting into foul trouble later in the second half, having 25 fouls in the game. The Mustangs benefited tremendously, making 29-34 free throws.
The Rattlers offense was great, making nearly half their shots. On the field they were 29-60 (48.3%) and shot the three ball well, going 9-22 (40.9%).Â
