Edmond, OK - Jordan Doss (Chicago, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy) has a career day in the Payne Athletic Center, dropping 37pts as the Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball team defeats Oklahoma Christian 78-62.
Jordan Doss (Chicago, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy) got things going early with the first 10 Mustang points all coming from him. Going into the half, Doss dropped 20pts and went 4-5 from three. Ending his career day, Doss went (14-19) on the field and was (6-8) from beyond the arc.
"I am really really proud of Jordan. I challenged both him and Tony after the UAFS loss and basically told them they needed to be better and they both were today" said Head coach Zane Gibson.
Doss's 37pts comes within 3pts of Matthew Enriquez's "modern day" record of 40pts in a game in the 2002-03 season.Â
Momentum was on the Mustangs side for most of the first half. For a 6:00 minute period the Mustangs went on a 15-0 run. At the half, the Mustangs led 39-33.
Joshuwan Johnson (Phoenix, AZ/Maricopa High School) continued his hot shooting from three, making three shots in a row during the 15-0 run. Johnson would end the day with 11pts.
"Josh has really started finding his rhythm since we returned from Christmas break. He's approached practice with a much more purpose," said Gibson. "We need his shot making and play making on the court. I am proud of what he's done over the last three weeks."
The Mustangs shot 14-30 (46.7%) on the floor and were 8-17 (47.1%) from the three point line in the first half. Despite not scoring for 6:00 minutes, the eagles had a good first half as well, shooting 13-32 (40.6%) and was 6-17 (35.3%) from three.
To start the second half, Oklahoma Chirstian battled and kept the game within five points. With about five minutes left in the game, the Mustangs began to extend the lead to double figures.
After scoring just 4pts on Thursday's game against Arkansas-Fort Smith, Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate HS) got things cookin'. Avalos ended the game with 17pts.Â
WNMU finished the game shooting 48.2% and 47.6% from three. The Mustangs made 14 free throws out of 18 attempts (77.8%). The Mustangs out-rebounded the Eagles 34 to 31, though both teams had 65 possessions each.Â
Limiting the turnovers this game, WNMU had 11 to OC's 13. The Mustangs converted 21pts off of turnovers. WNMU had 11 steals, lead by four Mustangs having 2 steals each.
The Eagles had four players score in double-figures. Drew Tennialled all Eagle scores with 15pts and 8 rebounds. Anthony Johnson had 13pts and 6 rebounds, Juston Nimmer had 12pts and 5 rebounds, and D.J. Walter had 10pts and 3 rebounds.Â

"You always want momentum throughout the season. This win has given that to us going into a massive home stand," said Gibson. "Texas A&M-Commerce and Tyler are both Top-25 caliber teams. We will be tested, hopefully the Mustangs meet the challenge."
The (8-4) Mustangs are back at home, January 21st, playing against Texas A&M-Commerce for a 7:30pm tip-off. On January 23rd, WNMU will play UT Tyler for a 4:00pm tip-off.
