SILVER CITY, N.M - Western New Mexico University's Women's Basketball Head Coach Josh Pace has officially announced its 2021-22 game schedule.
The Mustangs will play 26 contests including two exhibition games against Division I opponents and 24 regular-season games. 20 of the contests will be conference matchups along with 6 non-conference opponents this season.
"We are looking forward to getting back on the court for the 2021-22 season. Last year we did not get the opportunity to play many games due to the pandemic. However, we got tons of practice and skill development time which will be key in the upcoming season," said Pace. "We have a good group of student-athletes who work hard every day and have accepted the challenge that comes with being a student-athlete."
The season tips off October 28th, as the Mustangs head to Division I Grand Canyon University for the first exhibition game. November 9th, New Mexico State University will host the Mustangs at the historic Pan American Center to round out the last of the exhibition matches.
The Mustangs will be hosting a two-game WNMU Conference Challenge, November 12th &13th at Drag's Court, playing against New Mexico Highlands University and Fort Lewis College. WNMU will also host a few in-region conference games at Drag's Court beginning with Northern New Mexico College, on November 17th. The Mustangs will hit the road for two more in-region games against Cameron University, December 2nd, and West Texas A&M, December 4th.
On December 9th, Eastern New Mexico travels out to Silver City for an in-region match up and the Mustangs will also host Lubbock Christian University, December 11th. For the final in-region nonconference game of the season, the University of Southwest will compete in the battle of Mustangs on December 13th. Â
The LSC Conference has a bi-week during the week of December 26th- December 31st which grants the Mustangs an extended Christmas break having the week after off.
The Mustangs will begin LSC conference play in a stretch of two home games against Texas A&M University-Kingsville, January 7th, and Texas A&M International University on January 9th.Playing two more LSC competitors, the Mustangs will make the journey to University of Arkansas-Forth Smith, January 13th and to Oklahoma Christian, January 15th.
WNMU has been chosen to be the "Lone Wolf" forcing conference travel partners to play on Tuesdays before they travel to Silver City.
The Mustangs will alternate home and away weekends in conference action, traveling to the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith and Oklahoma Christian University the following weekend.
The remaining road LSC contests include trips to St. Edward's University and St. Mary's University, Midwestern State University and Dallas Baptist University, and Lubbock Christian University. The game Eastern New Mexico serves as the regular-season finale on February 26th.The home conference matchups will encompass Texas A&M-Commerce and UT Tyler, Angelo State and UT Permian Basin, and West Texas A&M and home finale February 19th against Cameron University.
The Lone Star Conference Tournament action begins on March 1st with on-campus sites TBD, with the remainder of the tournament March 3rd-6th in Frisco, Texas. The South Central Regional is slated to be played March 12th-15th.
