Falcons Spoiler Opener From Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Western New Mexico University's Volleyball was finally able to compete after their Fall season was delayed until the Spring. The UT Permian Basin Falcons spoiled the Mustangs opener winning the hard-fought battle in three sets.

"I can't be happy with a 0-3 loss, but goodness it felt good to be on the court again tonight and having an opponent across the net. It's so hard to imagine it has been 15 months since we have been able to do so," said Head Coach Holly Watts.

Taliyah Balladares (Santa Fe, NM/Santa Fe High School) and Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School) saw their first collegiate action tonight. Balladares ended the night with 13 digs and 3 ast; similarly, Hertzog had 11 digs and 7 ast. Tatiana Ortiz-Hannah (Sahuarita, AZ/Sahuarita High School) saw extended time as well, inking 3 kills and hitting .400 on the night.

"Due to injuries and other unforeseen circumstances, we have players playing in some unforeseen positions, so kudos to their efforts for sure. We had five players see their first extended action in a collegiate game, giving outstanding effort and production," said Watts.

After having the advantage in the first set 4-2, the Falcons went on to score 16 of the next 17 points. The Mustangs inched closer before the Falcons took the first set 25-14.

Megan Custer (El Paso, TX/Eastwood High School) and Adriana Leon (Lodi, CA/Sahuarita High School) came out in the second set with some fire, having three kills each. The Mustangs battled and led to start the match until the Falcons went on three 4-0 runs throughout the match. UTPB would go on to take set two 25-18.

Set three started off to a rocky start as the Mustangs found themselves down 10-3. After a timeout, the Mustangs would score six of the next seven points making the score 11-9. Two more large runs helped secure the set 25-19. Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) led the Mustangs with five kills in the set.

"We showed tremendous effort but it's the production we will be working to improve. We'll be working to balance our attack and making the most out of each play" concluded Watts.

Mustangs to Highlight:
B: Augustine: 8 kills, 13 digs, and 1 block assist
M. Custer: 6 kills, hit .455, and 1 block assist
A: Leon: 5 kills, 7 digs, and 2 ast
M. Culp: 12 ast, 5 digs, and 1 kill
