Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico Mustangs competed against the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals Saturday afternoon at Drag's Court. The Chaps would end the game with a final score of 67-39.
The first and second quarter for the was difficult for the Mustangs to find their offensive rhythm while also putting a stop to the to the Chaps defensively. An early three-pointer by
Alina Simon (Killeen, TX/Ellison High School) would keep the Mustangs close behind the Chaps, 5-7. The first quarter ended with the Mustangs trailing 20-9 and by halftime, the score was 42-15 as the Chaps looked strong.
In the third quarter, sophomore
Myla Lee (Glendale, AZ/Cactus HS) drew a momentum needed and-one as and added two more on the board. The Mustangs came out on the court much more aggressive and it showed even in their points. Junior
Zyan Smith (Queen Creek, AZ/Mesquite High School ) went on a 4-point run giving the Mustangs slow confidence in their shooting game. By the end of the third, WNMU shot 41.67% from the field goal range and the score ended at 54-28.
In the final quarter of the game, sophomore
Olivia Lee (Peoria, AZ/Cactus HS) had a wave of grit and was dominating in defensive rebounds for the Mustangs. The Chaps would go on to have a 9 point run with 3 in the field goal range shots and one three pointer. Mustangs would end up shooting significantly better than the Chaparrals from the field goal range with WNMU having 40% over the opponents' 33.3%. The final score of the game ended with the Chaps defeating the Mustangs 67-39.
