Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Volleyball team concluded their 2021 season on Saturday afternoon against Texas A&M University-Commerce. The Lions ended defeating the Mustangs, in a three game match.
 
Graduating senior, Maggie Roe (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City High School) left a piece of her heart on the court this afternoon, ending with 11 kills with a .611 hitting percentage over the three set match. Roe did not have one error within all three sets and left large shoes to fill for the next right side hitter.
 
Senior, Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) was second highest in kills totaling 10 for the afternoon. Junior middle blocker, Zoe Chatterton had great power with her hits having 7 kills with a hitting percentage of .700. 

Freshman setter, Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School) would lead the Mustangs in assists with 17 total and two aces. Veteran setter, Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) would come in a close second with 16 assists and also two aces for the match. 

As for the Mustang defense, freshman Eliana Moultrie (El Paso, TX/Canutillo HS) continued to prove her presence on the court with 11 kills against the strong Lion offense.  

Mustangs came out ready to play for their graduating seniors at the beginning of set one. Each point had to be earned on either side of the night, creating a very competitive memorizing match. As the Lions got one point, the Mustangs took the second point and so on as WNMU led 20-15 in the first set. The Lions came back to tie the score at 21-21. Both teams were very determined to win and after long rallies, the Lions ended the set 31-29.
 
Set two had a different momentum change on the Mustangs and blocking errors would be the thing to cost them game two. The Lions came out on top, 25-20. 
 
In the final set, TAMUC started strong with a 4-0 run on WNMU setting the home team with a dangerous place to be. Mustang offense would struggle to find inside court area within the sidelines within the entire set and scored off of 10 kills. In the end, TAMUC would finish the match 25-14 taking WNMU away from a win in their final game.
