Odessa, TX - Coming off a huge win just a night ago, the Western New Mexico University's Men's Basketball scored over a 100 points in a win against Adams State, concluding the LSC-RMAC Conference Challenge. WNMU would go on to defeat the Grizzlies of Adam State 101-91.
"I am very proud of our guys," said Head coach Zane Gibson. "They have really bought into the process and really worked hard during the fall leading up to this Conference Challenge."
The Mustangs shot 62.7% from the field and 54.2% from beyond the arc. At the free throw line the Mustangs were 24-29, shooting 82.8%.
Jordan Doss (Chicago, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy) had an exceptional day,having 24pts, 6 rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Doss had 38pts on the weekend!
Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate HS) also had a great weekend. After having 21pts last night, Avalos had 17 against the Grizzlies. Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe HS) also had double-digit points, finishing the day with 12pts.
"The team's hard work paid off this weekend. WE were the only team to go 2-0 in the challenge," said Gibson.
Both teams had 17 turnovers but the Mustangs out rebounded ASU 31 to 25, resulting in more offensive opportunities. WNMU moved the ball around, having 15 assists.
Working hard in the paint, the Mustangs had 39pts from inside the paint. Capitalizing on turnovers helped the Mustangs all weekend. WNMU finished the day with 19pt off of ASU mistakes.Â
The Mustangs bench were not shy to shoot the ball. 42pts came from off the bench. Robert Banks (Dallas,TX /Duncanville HS) and Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ/Cienega HS) had 9pts each. Joshuwan Johnson (Phoenix, AZ/Maricopa High School), Ian Hohenstein (Veracruz, Mexico/Faith Christian Academy), and Dylan Arnette (DeSoto, TX/Dallas Carter HS) all had 8pts as well.
"The guys were great teammates throughout the weekend, really pulling for each other, and our bench was very much into the game," said Gibson.
Adams State didn't shy away from the Mustangs. The Grizzlies shot 54.7% from the field and 38.1 from behind the three point line. The Grizzlies did convert 25pts from the Mustangs turnovers. Their bench also had 38 points.
"We had some individuals really take some strides and I was happy to see them have success," said Gibson. "This is just the start and we have to keep improving as a team so we can keep building our team confidence."

"I don't know if the guys or I are more excited about playing a home game on Thursday!" said Gibson. I think we all are ecstatic since it has been years since the people of Silver City have seen the Mustangs play at Drag's Court."
The Mustangs will come home for their first home games in two years, playing against NAIA Southwest Assembly of God University American Indian College Thursday at 6:00pm and Friday at 3:30pm.
"If our guys bring great energy and hard work, I believe we will have a good turnout of people who will be excited to see them in person" concluded Gibson.
