Eagles Push Past Mustangs on Drag;s Court

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Trailing for most of the game, the Mustang Women's Basketball team sparked a fourth quarter comeback against the visiting Eagles of Oklahoma Christian in an effort to break their skid. The comeback fell short as OCU used efficient shooting in all categories to steal a 73-67 triumph on Drag's Court Saturday afternoon.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy)16 PTS | 4-8 3FG | 6 REB | 4 AST
Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School)15 PTS | 6-10 FG | 1-2 3FG | 2-3 FT | 5 REB
Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) – 11 PTS | 3 REB | 3 AST

HOW IT HAPPENED:
A layup from Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) opened, before the Eagles responded with a 7-0 scoring run. From then on, it was a game of catch up for the Mustangs. It appeared as if OCU could not miss, finishing the first quarter with a 10 point advantage, shooting over fifty percent from the floor to go along with 5, three pointers.

The Eagles lead built up to as many as fifteen in the second. A jumper from Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas), followed by a three from Amanda Perea (Albuquerque, New Mexico/La Cueva High School) lessened the lead to single digits. Under five minutes left in the first half, the teams exchanged baskets before a layup by Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) closed it out, with her team trailing by six.

Trading blows throughout the third quarter, the Eagles managed to maintain a seven point lead by the end, despite only outscoring the Mustangs by one.

With ten minutes left to play, WNMU put together plays on both the offense and defense to pull within three. Before the buzzer, and drifting away from the basket, Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) threw up a shot finding the back of the net while also drawing the foul. For the first time since the first few minutes of the game, WNMU had come back to tie it up at 60.

With a few more ties, OCU took over around the 3:22 mark, going on a 6-0 run to create just enough distance and assure the 73-67 win.
Western shot 25-of-66 (37.9%) from the floor, scoring 28 of their points within the paint.

UP NEXT:
Before closing out the season with back-to-back home weekends, the Mustangs will embark on their final road trip to San Antonio, Texas to clash with the Rattlers of St. Mary's. They will close out their road trip against St. Edward's in Austin on Saturday, Feb. 15.
