Softball Wins Back and Forth Affair over Central Washington

ST. GEORGE, UT – In a back and forth affair, the Western New Mexico Softball team closed out the Dixie State Courtyard Classic tallying their fifth win of the season, 5-3, over Central Washington.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a silent first two innings, Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS ) got the WNMU offense going with an infield single. Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) tacked on a single of her own, followed by a walk to load the bases. With Corral in scoring position, a wild pitch allowed her to score, for the first run of the game.

A homerun over left field from the bat of Gracee Dwyer, put the Wildcats ahead by one. After a pitching change, the Mustangs defense made smart plays withholding CWU from scoring anymore. It was WNMU's turn to go long in their half of the inning, as Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS ) shot one over the right field wall for two-runs and the go ahead lead.

It seemed to become a game of "anything you can do I can do better" as the lead off hitter for CWU crushed their second homerun of the game to tie it up at three.

Again off the bat of Corral, the Mustangs notched another two runs in the bottom of the sixth, enough to seal their fifth win of the season.
Corral finished the day a perfect 4-for-4, with two runs and four RBIs. On the mound, Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) closed out the game and earned her first win of the season, allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings pitched.

UP NEXT:
The softball team will have a quick turn around, but will embark on their shortest road trip of the season next week for the 2020 D2 Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona. In a similar format to this weekend, the Mustangs will face a total of five opponents over a span of three days. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., Friday February 13th against the University of Hawaii – Hilo.
