UAFS, Oklahoma Christian Up Next for Women's Basketball

SILVER CITY, N.M. –  Coming off a tough road series, and down a number of key players, women's basketball looks to find comfort and success on their home court this weekend. The Mustangs are set to host newcomers UAFS and Oklahoma Christian for a couple of conference contests. Games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.

LAST TIME OUT:
In the first meeting between West Texas A&M and Western New Mexico, the Lady Buffs used big first and third quarters on their way to a 69-52 win in Silver City. With experience this time around, WNMU hoped to build on their record and steal on in Canyon last Thursday. Things were kept fairly tight throughout the first half, and Western would come alive in the fourth quarter scoring 21 to the Lady Buffs 14. Despite the last minute effort, WNMU would fall 74-41.
Having found success on their road trip prior, the Mustangs looked to cap off the weekend on a high note and avenging their loss to cross state rival Eastern New Mexico Saturday in Greyhound Arena. Though they surpassed double digits, the Eastern New Mexico offense could not be contained as they tallied twenty plus points in three of the four quarters to sweep the season series 83-53. Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) and Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) each contributed 11 points in the loss, while Jayla Jackson (Killeen, TX/) led with nine rebounds.

UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS –FORT SMITH LIONS (10-10, 7-7 LSC)
Riding high on a two game win streak, the Lions of UAFS will make their first appearance on Drag's Court looking to make it three straight. In their inaugural season with the Lone Star Conference, UAFS currently averages over 60 points per game and are currently in a three-way tie in their division with Midwestern State and Oklahoma Christian. Up until two weekends ago, the Lions had yet to claim a division victory but quickly changed their fate claiming three in the past two weekends.
Shooting at a .391 clip, the Lions offense ranks two spots above the Mustangs at #14, and are 11th in defense keeping their opponents to 67 points per game.

OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN EAGLES (6-12, 6-8 LSC)
In their first meeting of the season, the Eagles enter Saturday's contest with a 1-8 road record, 2-3 in the last five games – including an overtime loss to travel partner UAFS last weekend in Fort Smith. Megan Shelton and Maddison Collyer each chipped in 20 or more points in the loss.
Collyer a primary starter for OCU, rarely sits averaging  34.7 minutes a game allowing her to lead the team in scoring with 12.0 points per game. She also shares the wealth, averaging 5.6 assists. Her five in their last game was enough to reach 100 for the season.
