Lubbock/Angelo, Tex. – After taking a break for the holidays, the Western New Mexico Women's Basketball team turns their attention back to conference play, taking on the undefeated and defending National Champions Lubbock Christian Thursday (5:30 P.M. CST), followed by a meeting with the Rambelles of Angelo State Saturday (2 p.m. CST). This weekend's match up will count towards the Mustang's divisional record. Prior to this weekend, UTPB has been the only other divisional opponent, dropping that meeting to the Falcons back on Nov. 23.
A LOOK BACK:
The women of Western closed out 2019 on the road at Texas A&M International and Texas A&M Kingsville back on Dec. 19 and 21. Held to single digits in both quarters of the second half, the Mustangs fell to the Dustdevils in the first contest of the weekend. However, they would close out the road trip and the year on a positive note snagging a 53-43 win over TAMUK, snapping a four game skid.
Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) led all scorers with a season high 17-points, shooting 6-9 from the field and a flawless 4-4 when brought to the line. Senior forward,
Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) also chipped in 10-points, along with four rebounds, and an assist.
SCOUTING THE LADY CHAPS:
With the addition of the Heartland Conference, the Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian will continue to make their Lone Star Conference debut, sitting 5-0 so far in league play and have yet to drop a game this season, 11-0 overall.
Senior forward, Maddi Chitsey leads the Lady Chaps offensive efforts averaging double figures with 15.0 points, and 6.4 rebounds a game. Allie Schulte and Ashton Duncan contribute to the offense, with 13.2 and 13.4 points per game respectively. As a team, LCU averages 71.5 points, outscoring opponents by a staggering 13.6 margin, while shooting 45.0 from the field, and averaging 6.2 blocks per game.
SCOUTING THE RAMBELLES:
Game two of the weekend, will feature the Rambelles of Angelo State who sit 6-3 overall, and 3-2 in league play. In the overall series, the two teams have met a total of eight times with ASU dominating with a 7-1 record. The lone win for Western came back in 2013, in the very first meeting, claiming a 59-52 victory in Silver City.
De'Anira Moore is the lead scorer for ASU, scoring in double-figures in both games prior to the holiday break. Defensively, Moore also averages 8.0 rebounds and leads the team with 17 blocks. Asia Davis adds to the ASU offense, averaging 11.6 points per game while shooting 38 % from the floor while also averaging 4.3 rebounds a game.
