Mustangs Scare West Texas with Second Half Surge

Box Score Canyon, Tex. — Western New Mexico football traveled to Buffalo Stadium on the campus of West Texas A&M Saturday night to continue conference play. Despite a surge in the second half, the Mustangs fell to WT 45-21.

TOP PERFORMERS:

CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) - 30-of-49 | 344-yards | 3 TDs

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WNMU were forced to punt on their first two drives of the game.
  • WT got on the board at the 8:35 mark on a 7-yard rush from Logan Vallo. The Buffs would score once more at just before the end of the quarter, on top of a field goal to take a early 17-0 edge.
  • Threatening to score at the start of the second quarter, a series of penalties gave the Mustangs some breathing room as the Buffs were forced to punt.
  • Midway through the second quarter, WT would score again though to go up 24-0 going into the break
  • The Mustang defense came up big to start the second half. A forced fumble by Thomas Webb (Tucson, AZ/Cienega HS) Jr. would be recovered by Kaleb Gutierrez (El Paso, TX/Franklin HS) at the WT 34-yard line to give the possession to WNMU.
  • CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) would make the most of the possession finding Josh Powell from 20-yards out to put WNMU on the board.
  • Short lived, the Buffs would score in the drive immediately following the Mustang score.
  • With the ball at the end of the third, the Mustangs entered the fourth capping off a 10 play 68-yard drive with a 15-yard pass to Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) from Fowler to get the Mustangs to double-digits.
  • The team would each punt in their following drives.
  • In WT's second drive of the quarter, Izell Price (Detroit, MI/Westlake HS ) would force a WT fumble but it would be recovered by the Buffs in the end zone for a touchdown.
  • WNMU would answer just under the six minute mark, Fowler found Josh Powell from 11-yards, followed by a successful two-point conversion from Oly Taase to cut into the WT lead, 38-21.
  • In the red-zone once again on their next drive, WNMU was unable to finish turning over on downs.
  • WT remained clean at home winning 45-21.
