Volleyball Hits The Road for Three Games

Silver City, N.M. – After opening the conference season at home on Drag's Court, the Western New Mexico volleyball team goes back on the road this weekend for a three-game series. First up are the Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian, followed by Angelo State, with the Mustangs wrapping up the weekend at UT – Permian Basin, Monday Sept. 30.
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
  • Senior outside hitter Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) leads the Mustangs offensive efforts, averaging 3.21 kills/set in 29 sets played. Her efforts put her 7th in the conference standings so far this season.
  • Dishing it out to the Mustang offense is senior setter Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School) who is just shy of 200 assists this season, averaging 7.26 assists/set, 5th in the LSC standings.
  • Senior libero Gabi Lau (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School), picked up right where she left off last season, racking up 102 digs for an 4.25 average.
  • Hannah Tishlarich (Elk Grove, CA/Pleasant Grove High School) proves to be efficient in the middle, hitting .447 on the young season. In last Friday's match, Tishlarich went 9-for-10 with zero errors to hit .900.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
Friday, Sept. 27 | Lubbock, Tex. | 6 p.m. (5 p.m. MST)
Lubbock Christian (6-5 overall, 1-2 LSC)
  • The Lady Chaps will be home for the first time in their last eight games, opening conference play last weekend at Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M, as well as a midweek game against Angelo State.
  • Currently, riding a two-game losing streak LCU defeated Eastern New Mexico 3-1 to start LSC play on a high note, before dropping a five-set heartbreaker to West Texas A&M to go 1-1 on the weekend.
  • At home, LCU holds a 3-1 record so far this season.
  • Behind the ball is sophomore setter, Bradi Marshall. Marshall has tallied 404 assists so far this season and leads the conference with 10.10 assists/set, while also averaging 2.85 digs/set.
  • On the receiving end of Marshall's sets is senior outside Hannah Thomas. Thomas is 12th in the LSC standings with 130 kills for 3.02 kills/set.
  • Defensively, Maddie DeGuire sits a spot above Lau in the LSC rankings, averaging 4.51 digs a set.
 
Angelo State (11-1 overall, 3-0 LSC)
Saturday, Sept 28 | San Angelo, Tex. | 2 p.m. (1 p.m. MST)
  • The Belles of Angelo State made quick work of the Lady Chaps taking the three-set sweep Wednesday night to maintain their flawless 3-0 conference record.
  • ASU lone loss of the season came at the hands of Colorado School of Mines in the Mountain Lion Invitational earlier in the season.
  • Seven out of their 12 matches have been won in straight sets.
  • Angelo State holds an 8-2 series record over the Mustangs, winning the last three matches between the teams.
  • In their second meeting last season, ASU squeaked by with a 3-2 win in Silver City, knocking WNMU out of the conference tournament.
  • As a team the Belles sit 2nd in hitting percentage, while holding their opponents to a .120 clip.
 
UT – Permian Basin (9-1 overall, 1-0 LSC)
Monday, Sept. 30 | Odessa, Tex. | 1:30 p.m. (12:30 MST)
  • The Mustangs will meet up with the Falcons of UT – Permian Basin for the second time in 10 days.
  • In their first meeting on Sept. 20, UTPB took home a 3-0 sweep, and only their second win ever over WNMU.
  • WNMU holds a 7-2 advantage in the overall series, with their two wins coming in three-sets and in Silver City. Last season the Falcons took the first meeting, before the Mustangs took a five-set win in Odessa.
  • In the Sept. 20 match, the Mustangs were held to a .030 hitting percentage, while the Falcons hit over .200 in the second and third sets to take home the match.
  • Travana Matthews was a force on both offense and defense, hitting .625 with five kills while adding 4.0 blocks.
