Volleyball Opens Conference Season Friday Against Falcons

Silver City, N.M. – After being on the road for the first two weekends of the season, the Western New Mexico volleyball team returns to Drag's Court to open conference play. The Falcons of UT – Permian Basin travel to Silver City Friday.

SKYHAWK VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT – Weekend 2 Recap:
  • The Mustangs opened their second tournament of the preseason against host Fort Lewis College, falling in a five-set thriller.
  • In their second game of the tournament, Western fell to Adams State in three-sets.
  • The Mustangs suffered sweeps in their final two games of the tournament, one at the hands of top-ranked Washburn, the other to fellow Lone Star Conference member, Texas A&M – International
  • Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) earned her second All-Tournament on the young season.
 
LOOKING AHEAD:
  • The Mustangs look to break their losing streak, and start the conference season on a high note.
  • Senior outside hitter Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) currently leads the team in attacks with 91 on the season so far, averaging 3.50 kills/set. She currently sits 7th in the conference in kills/set.
  • Defensively, the Mustangs have racked up 50.0 total blocks, 18.0 of which came at the hands of senior middle blocker, Deyzha Samuelu (Garden Grove, CA/Edison High School).
  • In the back row, senior libero Gabi Lau (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) is picking up right where she left off last season, tallying 94 digs so far, averaging 4.48/set.
  • Dishing out 7.29 assists per set, is senior setter Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School). She also leads the team with eight service aces.
 
SCOUTING THE FALCONS:
  • UT – Permian Basin enters the weekend on a four game winning streak, and an 8-1 overall record.
  • Seven of their eight wins came in straight set sweeps, with their lone loss to Dixie State. The most recent sweep came over Southwest (N.M) Tuesday night in Hobbs, N.M.
  • Senior middle, Travana Matthews averages 2.54 kills/set while leading the conference with a .454 hitting percentage. On the opposite side of the ball, Matthews averages 1.19 blocks a set, third in the conference.
  • Behind Matthews, is senior defensive specialist Sarah Vasquez. Vasquez averages 5.48 digs per set for the Falcons.
  • As a team, the Falcons have held their opponents to a .104 hitting percentage, and only 8.50 assists per set.
