Durango, CO — The Western New Mexico volleyball team opened up the Skyhawk Volleyball Tournament this evening against the host, Fort Lewis (2-3). The match was the home opener for the Skyhawks and match one of the three day, five team tournament held in Whalen Gymnasium.

How It Happened:

  • Mustangs opened the match on a 4-0 run, which turned in to 9-1 advantage before the Skyhawks had enough.
  • WNMU maintained the lead going up by as many a nine, eventually taking the first set 25-17.
  • Set two was a little but closer, as the teams traded points back and forth till late. WNMU benefited from a 6-0 scoring run to take set two 25-19 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Set three and four saw the Mustangs start slow and get down early. Despite a valiant effort late in the sets, WNMU could not recover and dropped both sets to force a deciding fifth set.
  • A 4-1 start in the fifth set looked promising for the Mustangs, before unforced errors allowed the Skyhawks to crawl back in. WNMU tied the set at 14 to force a win by two situation but back-to-back errors gave Fort Lewis the 16-14 set and match win.
