Volleyball Heads to Durango for Second Preseason Tournament

Silver City, N.M.—Mustang Volleyball has a quick turnaround this week, heading north this time to Durango, Colorado for the Skyhawks Volleyball Tournament. WNMU will play four games over three days.

Skyhawks Tournament Breakdown:
 
  • The Mustangs have dominated the last seven meetings between them and the Skyhawks. Thursday's meeting will be the first since WNMU moved to the Lone Star Conference.
  • Adams held a five game winning streak over WNMU up until last year, when the Mustangs took a 3-2 win over the Grizzlies in St. George, Utah.
  • Washburn enters the weekend riding high on a 4-0 record, and a win over then #23 ranked Central Washington
  • WNMU has won all three meetings with the Dustdevils of TAMIU, all in three set sweeps. Two of the three meetings were in Laredo. Due to the new format, the two teams will not meet again in the regular season.
 
Lookback on Weekend 1:
 
  • WNMU snapped a three-year streak of dropping their season opener, coming from behind to take a 3-2 win over Saint Martin's on day one of the CSUSM tournament.
  • The first two losses of the season came at the hands of host Cal State San Marcos and Azusa Pacific, both in three sets.
  • Mustangs capped off the weekend earning a sweep of their own over Bentley.
  • Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) was names to the All-Tournament team after tallying two double-doubles, averaging 3.83 kills per set.
  • Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School) joined Moss on the All-Tournament team, helping to lead the offensive efforts with 87 assists, averaging 6.69 assists per set.
 
The Watts Era:
 
  • Head coach Holly Watts made her debut last weekend at the helm of Mustang volleyball.
  • She takes over the program after spending five seasons with the Miners of UT – El Paso.
